Stormwatch: Aleutian Islands

blog, News · November 24, 2017

Part of our job is to be on the alert before natural disasters occur. We are constantly updated with strong storm systems moving through the oceans, and we’re in a constant state of readiness.

Right now we are watching the Aleutian Islands very carefully. Initial reports call for gusts of up to 100 mph winds and up to 50 foot waves on these tiny islands, and the storm looks to affect even the western part of Alaska in places like Bethel and Dillingham. This storm meets criteria for what they call a bombogenesis, which is when the atmospheric pressure drops 24 millibars in 24 hours. This storm dropped 55 millibars, and is currently estimated to be the most powerful storm on Earth right now.

We are building up our network of pilots and airlines throughout Alaska so we can move supplies if needed during our intense Alaskan winter storms.

When this storm passes, it appears that there is another in its footsteps. We will let you know if and when On The Ground makes a move; there may be some fundraising in the near future!
